Yes, seasoning your humidor is essential before storing cigars. It ensures the Spanish cedar lining is properly humidified and prevents it from absorbing moisture from your cigars.
Here’s how to season it properly:
- Wipe down the interior (including walls and tray) with a cloth lightly dampened with distilled/drinkable water. Don’t soak it — just moisten the surface.
- Place a small open container of distilled/drinkable water inside the humidor.
- Fill the humidifier with distilled/drinkable water or a humidification solution (if using gel or foam type).
- Close the lid and let it sit for 48–72 hours.
- Once the humidity reaches around 65–70%, remove the water container, check the hygrometer, and add your cigars.
Repeat the process if the humidity doesn’t stabilize initially. Never use tap water—it can lead to mold or mineral buildup.
